Moving Checklist For Buyers

ONGRATULATIONS! You have closed on your new home. You are now ready to move! If you start to get things done now while your home is under contract, then when the day comes to physically move your belongings, most of the details will be taken care of. Make sure you keep detailed records; some moving expenses are tax deductible. Also, keep detailed records of all moving expenses if your move is job related.

8 WEEKS BEFORE:

Remove unnecessary items from your attic, basement, storage shed, etc. You can begin to sort through your belongings to reduce the number of things to move.
Decide whether to move yourself of hire professionals. Solicit estimates from atleast three moving companies.
Make reservations with a moving company or truck rental company.
Obtain information about your new community.
Secure a floor plan of your new residence and decide what household items you want to keep.
Create a file for documenting all moving papers and receipts.
Arrange to transfer your children's school records.

6 WEEKS BEFORE:

Notify your friends, relatives, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
Subscribe to a local paper in your new community and familiarize yourself with local government, community and social news and activities.
Locate high-quality healthcare professionals and hospitals in your new location.
Complete post office change of address cards.
Clean your closets
Hold a moving/garage sale or donate items to charities.
Choose a mover and contact them to make arrangements and inquire about insurance coverage.
If relocating due to a job, contact your employer to see what costs, if any, they will cover.

4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Start packing!Pack items that aren't regularly used such as off-season clothes, decorations, and items in storage areas.
Place your legal, medical, financial, and insurance records in a safe and accessible place.
Contact gas, electric, water, telephone, cable TV and trash collection companies for service disconnect/connect at your old and new addresses.
Contact insurance companies (auto, homeowner's, medical and life) to arrange for coverage in your new home.

3 WEEKS BEFORE:

Make your travel plans.
Notify your state's motor vehicle bureau of your new address.
Arrange for childcare on moving day.

2 WEEKS BEFORE:

Call friends and family and recruit help for the moving day.
Arrange special transport for your pets and plants.
Service your car for the trip.
Contact your moving company and review arrangements for your move.

1 WEEK BEFORE:

Prepare detailed directions and itinerary with emergency numbers for your moving company.
Settle outstanding bills with local retailers.
Pick up dry cleaning, and return library books and rented videotapes.
Take pets to the veterinarian and get copies of their records.
Cancel newspaper delivery.
Buy two weeks worth of medication and have your prescriptions forwarded to your new pharmacy.
Buy traveler's checks.

DAY BEFORE:

Contact your moving company for any updates.
Pack first night items and place them in your car. First night items may include: sheets, towels, toiletries, phone, alarm clock, change of clothes and flashlight.

MOVING DAY:

Carry with you:

The keys to your new home.
A map of your new town and directions to your home.
The telephone number of the moving company.
Cash or traveler's checks.
Documentation related to the sale of your home.
Your insurance policies and agent's phone number.
Your current address book or personal planner.
Prescription and non-prescription medicines.
Enough clothing to get by if the movers are late.
Any items of great personal value to you that is virtually irreplaceable.
Back-up copies of important computer files.
Sheets, towels and personal hygiene items for the first night in your new home.

ARRIVAL AT YOUR NEW HOME:

Show movers where to place furniture and boxes.
Check inventory to ensure that everything was delivered before signing delivery papers.
Note any damages on the inventory sheet.
Unpack any valuable items, such as silver, art, and jewelry, upon arrival.
